A Birthday for the Boy

July 29th, 2011

The man of our house turned 27 today. This evening we went out to celebrate. We dined at St. Francis, maybe kissed a little bit in the bathroom, then headed on to Churn for ice cream, cookies, and the boy’s special request – an affogato. We even got a little rain on the drive home.

The boy was dapper and handsome and winsome.

Happy Birthday, my love. So grateful we share this world together. Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday.

(Our very first What He Wore post coming soon…)

FIVE

May 27th, 2011

Five years ago today I was nervous and excited, hopeful and grateful. Five years ago today I made the best decision I will ever make.

I married my best friend and my life began to unfold before me.

Since that day, my husband and I, we’ve created a universe together. We purchased our first home and remodeled the entire inside. We not only made a house but created a home straight from our dreams. It continues to be a work in progress, and I love it that way. We are always growing together. We made a plan for a family to put in that house and over the past three years, have nurtured it into fruition. I have seen my dreams from childhood materialize. Hand in hand with the love of my life.

I hope you have a beautiful day. Share your light and love with someone special.

The Life We’ve Made

May 26th, 2011

Five years tomorrow for us. We’ve done a lot in five years and all of it seems to have flown by. In our pre-babe days, we’d skip off to San Diego for our wedding anniversaries. When Ella came along, we just skipped over to the next town and explored with our munchkin, pretending that we were on a more distant vacation. This year we decided to keep our celebrating at home, with the two little lives this love has made. We’ve got five days to spend together, savoring each other and family outings.

We took each other out last night to commemorate our five years as husband and wife. Dinner, ice cream, cookies, and coffee. It became an extended date night for us, thanks to my generous parents for spoiling us.

We started at St. Francis in downtown Phoenix. We sat on the patio, ivy and lights overhead. Starter, salad, delicious steaks. We allowed ourselves to splurge and that, we did. Something we thought was amazing – the most random song from our wedding came through the speakers at the beginning of our meal, then as we finished up, the song we had our first dance to (I’m Yours) began to play. We wanted to get up and dance. It felt a little magical.

We stopped at Churn for ice cream and cookies. Our eyes are bigger than our stomachs. There was no room in them when we left our dinner table, but this boy loves his coffee ice cream.

We finished our special night at Lux, a soy latte for me and an Arnold Palmer for Ant.

We came home, picked up our littles, tucked them into bed, and settled back into our real lives. Because this is the life we’ve made, and this is the life we love.

The Cow and the Kitty

April 1st, 2011

This morning I woke from a dream in which I was a dairy cow and Ant was a farm kitty.

I’ve spent the morning thinking this over and while it’s obvious why I, in my postpartum nursing state, starred as a dairy cow, I think it’s interesting to ponder why I cast my husband as a shaggy orange farm cat. So far I’ve come up with the comparisons that he is always around, cuddly, comforting, sometimes timid, quiet, and occasionally dons whiskers.

I think it’s telling that I came across as a large and slow, sometimes in the way, overbearing animal, and he was the agile, quick to move one with a patient heart. Isn’t it fitting that the cat with keen eyesight can spot the cumbersome cow making her way through the field, and knows just when to stay out of her way?

But all of this aside, I think a cow and a kitty have a lot of traits in common. Both are gentle, calm for the most part, and hold tender hearts within.

Can’t you just see a dairy cow and a farm cat nuzzled up close on a bed of hay together?

I think it’s a pretty perfect match.
