Mother Nature’s Playing Tricks…

March 6th, 2012

Mother Nature can’t make up her mind in Phoenix this week. She gives us sunny, warm and bright days that seem to be ushering in our Summer season early. Then she turns around and drops the temperature 20 degrees and we wake up the next day, chilly and hopeful, clinging to the idea of just a few more mild days…
Partly cloudy, full sunshine, gusty blustery winds – Mother Nature is acting as finicky as my mind sometimes. Whatever she chooses, I’ll take it and bask in the variety for a short time. (We all know those triple digits are on the horizon for our dry sunshiny home.)

I’m always sad to put away my boots when the weather heats up but maybe tomorrow I can get one last hurrah out of them before we enter our early Summer. And scarves, well those last about a month around these parts. I bought a warm coat this Winter and if it weren’t for our trip to Disneyland in December, I don’t think I’d have given it enough wear.

My sister came to stay over Christmas this year and brought two skirts to pass down to me. She is the best big sister to get hand-me-downs from. This dress is from her closet too.

Do you know why I love this skirt? First, it was my sister’s.
Second, poppies. There are poppies on it!!
I love it for its history too – my sister found it in a thrift store in Tokyo. I mean, really…
Thanks, Fooza. Love you.

How’s your week starting off? What kind of weather is Mother Nature giving you this week?

Tiny Style – Poppy’s Vintage Frock

March 1st, 2012

Lately Poppy has started to notice the process of picking out clothes and getting dressed, and every time I walk past her closet, she’s pointing and telling me what she wants to wear. I’ve only got this much time left to dress her, I can already feel it. Soon she’ll be matching polka dots with plaid with floral with hot pink with sparkles and looking like the cutest crazy person ever (ahem, like her big sister). I’ve only got a little time left to play dress up with this girl, and then everything will have to pass Poppy-approval.

Over the weekend Anthony found her standing in front of Ella’s closet, pointing up and chirping, and this little frock is what they came out with. What sweet luck, it fits!

I bought this dress from Kidwonder last year. It’s a size two and at the time Ella was on the verge of three-dom but I couldn’t pass it up. She did get to wear it a couple times, but then all of a sudden, just like that, she became a giant.

Luckily this weekend, it passed Miss Poppy’s approval.

I love Kidwonder! Have you been? I also love Frecklewonder! I’ve purchased a few my-size vintage pieces from Jenny’s shop and her blog is a daily read. If you haven’t visited, get over there!

I love the hand smocking and sewn-in petticoat of this dress. Can you imagine, little girls running around in these dresses every day? I think these girls need a few more…

Off to See the Wicked…

February 27th, 2012

Good morning! How was your weekend? Today I’m sharing a little outfit I wore out to dinner and a show with the husband. It was the best date!

So for Christmas, my parents bought Anthony and me two tickets to see the touring Broadway show Wicked. We went last Thursday afternoon and let me tell ya, it was AMAZING! Amazing. Really so good.

There’s just so much I could say about it and now here I am over a week later and wishing for a refresher performance. It’s funny because the day after the show, I was on the phone with my mom (who also saw Wicked, three years ago) and we got so excited talking about it that we both separately went online to see if there were any more tickets available for performances in the coming weeks. Sadly, the pickins are slim. But you can bet that if it comes around again, we are going.

I love the storyline of this show so much more than The Wizard of Oz. Truthfully I don’t think I’ve ever seen that movie the entire way through. I think it’s time I sit down and watch it – with Ella! I feel like Wicked answered so many questions that you didn’t even know you had about The Wizard of Oz.

In case you’re unfamiliar, Wicked follows the story of The Wicked Witch of the West and focuses on her relationship with Glinda the Good Witch. It takes you on her journey of becoming “the wicked witch” and is filled with such great songs and so much humor (especially delivered by Glinda). I’m just in love with this story.

About the wears: I bought these red gems at the start of last Fall, in preparation for my sister’s wedding. Her only request to the bridesmaids was that they wear a mustard/gold colored dress. In my search for the perfect shoes I stumbled upon these from Anthropologie and the crusade stopped. When they arrived at my door I put them on and instantly began referring to them as “my Dorothy shoes.” So – how could I not wear these to see Wicked? (Although Dorothy is merely a shadow in the play.)

I let the shoes do the talking and built the rest of the outfit with simple pieces. I love the feminine pearl beads and Peter Pan collar on this blouse from Ruche and cinched it just a tad with a tie from a dress. I’ve jumped on the happy colored jean train, first with red and now these cobalt pants. The length looked a little off with the heels so I tucked a few inches up underneath to create a cigarette length. It’s such a simple look and so comfortable, but made me feel like a put-together woman.

What a fun afternoon and evening with my mister. After the play we stuffed ourselves at our favorite pizza parlor and soaked up every second of our extended date. Thanks Mom and Dad, for this excellent gift and the extra long time to devote to each other. It was the Christmas gift that kept giving.

(Update, because I wrote this post late last week. Yesterday Ella and I sat down together and watched The Wizard of Oz! And. She. Loved. It. I was surprised that the Wicked Witch didn’t scare her too much because I still feel terrified when I see her floating past Dorothy’s window on her bike-turned-broom. But other than a few times where she covered her face with a blanket, she was enthralled. If the movie weren’t stored on Anthony’s computer at work with him, we’d be watching it now…she’s already asked me twice this morning.)

Happy Monday, guys!!

Flowers & Lace

February 16th, 2012

Hello friends! How was your Valentine’s Day? We had a nice calm day here, started off with warm drinks straight out of bed, courtesy of Daddy. Ella was in shock over her hot chocolate and Poppy was well aware that she was missing out. Soon enough, PoppyLou, soon enough…

We gave the girls little buckets of Valentine goodies and I wrapped a special bag of cookies and M&Ms just for Ella to devour throughout the day as she pleased. Free reign of cookies? A hit!

We went to Storytime at the library and Ella took a bag of cookies for the teacher. She was so excited to give her those cookies and when she handed them over all bashful I almost melted! As she walked away, she turned around and said loudly, “Happy Vannentime’s Day!”

On our way home, we stopped at the girls’ cousins house and Ella and I ran up to the door to leave them little surprises. I love doing things like that and now that Ella’s big enough to help, it’s so much more fun!

We had lunch with my parents and the girls got cute little gifts from them – needless to say, Ella is a major fan of Valentine’s Day.

Anthony and I kept things easy and low-key this year. We picked up a pizza for dinner and cut it into a heart shape, and the gasp out of Ella when she saw it was so funny. (There we go with the little things again…) And after dinner there were of course…more cookies.

It was a great day shared with the people we love. Having two tiny Valentines to spoil and shower with extra love is so much fun.

Anthony and I are treating today as our own sort of Valentine’s Day. For Christmas my parents bought us tickets to see Wicked and the day has finally come! So many people we know have seen it and said it was amazing! We haven’t been to a show in a long time, and I’m so excited for the experience! I hear there’s a plan for dinner after too – I can’t wait!

About the outfit, I wore this dress one night when I took Anthony out on a date. It’s nice to turn the tables and be the planner sometimes. This outfit would have been quite fitting for Valentine’s Day too, I think. The lace is so dainty and feminine and I’m in love with the collar. (It’s just too bad my dress looks the same shade as that wall – eep.)

Tights // Target
Bangles // Alex & Ani

Hope your Love Day was sweet! It’s almost the weekend, woot!!
