Poppy Lou is One Month
February 9th, 2011

This little bit of a girl is one month old.
When I look at her it’s all I can do to drink in her beautiful little features and realize how wonderfully she rounds out our family. We’re all smitten with her.

I love seeing how this girl is adapting to us. She can recognize each of our voices and bobs her head to turn in the direction of whoever is speaking. When she hears Ella close by, her eyes get wide and she looks most alert. I’ve noticed that when Ella laughs, Poppy starts getting fidgety with her hands and a little kicky with her legs. She gets excited when she hears her big sister and it’s so adorable.
She usually wakes two times a night, sleeping in spans of three to four hours. But just last night Miss Poppy Lou slept six and a half hours straight!

She is growing like a weed, putting on the pounds quickly. Born at six pounds, five ounces, she gained one pound, 11 ounces in her first two weeks. We weighed her at home tonight and she is now about nine pounds. Her arm and leg rolls are filling out nicely!
Her neck muscles are strengthening and she is getting so good at holding her head up. She is also getting really good at turning her head, albeit wobbly still. The other night we were reading stories with Ella, and Poppy heard Ant’s voice. So she strengthened her neck and bobbed her head to turn in his direction. Then I spoke and she turned back to face me. It was the cutest thing. Her wobbliness make her look like a little turtle when she holds her head up.

She is full of cute tiny noises. She snorts like a little piggy when she’s getting ready to eat. She has a squeaky noise (I’ll call it a pop-squeak) that she does at random times. Sometimes when she’s nursing, other times when she’s sleeping and jolts herself awake. Ant & I call her Poppy-saurus because she grunts and squeaks like a baby dinosaur.

Big sister Ella Faye surprises me every day with how accepting and loving she is toward Poppy. She gives her kisses out of the blue and proudly tells me, “I am the big sister” with her little index finger plastered to her chest. She is eager to help change dirty diapers and loves to help push Poppy in her swing. She brings toys and gently drops them into Poppy’s bed while she sleeps. The other night she helped me feed Poppy out of a bottle. She was beaming.
When Poppy cries, Ella interprets baby talk for us. The other morning, Ella was in another room and Poppy started crying and almost at the same time, Ella began yelling, “I whan Mommy! I whan Mommy!” in a frantic little voice she has deemed as Poppy’s.
She is a proud big sister and I can’t wait to see how their relationship develops as they grow older (but no hurry, Father Time…I’ll take them this size for as long as you’ll let me.)
Poppy absolutely loves being a part of Ella’s storytime before bed. We all pile on Mommy & Daddy’s bed and Ant reads books in funny voices. Ella thinks it’s hilarious and Poppy just can’t take her eyes off him. It’s the cutest thing ever. I think that’s my favorite thing so far – the way she gazes at her daddy.

Our little Pops has brought a lot of smiles and joy to our house. A lot of my time is spent just staring into her tiny face. We’re blessed in the way she’s enriched each of us already. She is the perfect addition to our family. I can’t believe we have a tiny pair of sisters on our hands, two little girls we couldn’t be more in love with. We are so grateful.
