Slumber
January 19th, 2011

I lay close to my two week old daughter, her nose three inches from mine.
I’ve left all agenda, priorities, tasks piled steep at the foot of the bed.
I watch with heavy eyelids as her sleeping face contorts into dozens of tiny expressions.
The pouty mouth
The quivering chin that precedes a cry
Her eyebrows raise, a hopeful look
They fall into a grimace, so concerned
She is busy in her slumber.
The face I recognize as “hungry”
And then the sun comes out.
Her sweetheart lips curl just slightly
One corner pulls up to reveal a smirk
Then inside out, a frown again
Her mouth opens and before me, a big gummy grin
I wonder what makes a smile so infectious.
And the foray begins again.
This is a rerun I could watch forever, and I stay for several encores until slumber wins me over too.

Katy,
I’m so happy that I can go online and feel like I’m there with you.
I enjoy reading about your days. Wish sometimes that I could be with you to help. Just wanted to know that I love you, and I’m so glad that you married my son. You both are so special. See you soon, Mom
