Christmas Lights + Hot Cocoa Does the Trick
December 12th, 2010

Ella and I trailed behind Ant down the streets between the dealership and our home on the night we bought our new “family vehicle.” Ella was upset that we had tried to trek home together, all three us, in the new car. She wasn’t ready to say goodbye to the old car and refused to let us move her carseat into the new.
On the drive home, I tried my best to explain why we were making the switch. I told her how we need a bigger car because Baby Sister is coming. I tried to make it exciting, telling her that Poppy is going to sit right next to her in the new car!!!!
An hour later, Ella was taking a bath when she told Ant that she would ride in mommy’s old red car and Poppy would walk home…

We needed a fun introduction to that new car. The next evening we went on a family date night out to dinner and then cruised around a few neighborhoods in search of houses lit with Christmas lights. There was one house in particular we remembered visiting in years past and this year it was just as amazing.

It is just a quaint little house on a corner of a lane, but I don’t think there is a square inch on that property without a little red or green light occupying space.
We parked around the corner and joined the mass of fans in front of the house.

Ella flapped her little excited hands. She pointed out the penguins by the pond and the happy gathering of miniature snowmen. She screamed at Charlie Brown as he popped out of an inflatable chimney.
On the way home we stopped at Starbucks for Ella’s first hot cocoa of her very own. I reserved half at home and let her drink out of the cozy red cup. The thrill on her face after each sip is unexplainable.

It really is the tiny things…
It seemed to work. She is a fan of the new car now and can’t wait to jump in each time we go out. Christmas lights and hot cocoa…they are magic makers.
Sweetest wishes, Katy
