Ella Turning Two
October 6th, 2010

Miss Ella Faye’s turning two was spicy and sweet.
Just like her.

Really? Pictures so soon?
The morning started with pancakes made by Daddy, served up on her new little tea table. The girl came out of her room, walked into the living room, and said “Wow, what’s dis?” (That’s her newest expression – “What’s dat/dis?”)

She ate more pancakes than Mommy and Daddy combined. She loves her daddy’s cakes.

Just as she was digging in, she spotted something floating outside the front window and wouldn’t you know? A Happy Birthday balloon with Piggy and Pooh, left by Auntie Erin first thing! I don’t know what pleased her more…the balloon or the Cinderella hairbrush that weighted it down.

Our morning was quiet, relaxed, pleasant. Until we came home from buying cake ingredients and started baking our cake. No way was that cake supposed to go in the oven. We were supposed to eat that pink batter straight out of the bowl.
Fits. Oh my goodness, there were fits to no end. Fits that just kept building on top of each other, piling up and turning into an absolute mess.
By nap time we were both exhausted and angry and I was beginning to dread the Year of Two already. She certainly initiated the year well, showing me just what the Terrible Twos are made of. And she can perform them well. I think it was our hardest day yet.
When Ant came home from work, we took a walk in the gorgeous temperature until it started to rain. We hardly sped up when the rain started coming down. Ella got her kicks out of it and I needed to be out of the house a little longer.

Dinner plans were cancelled and made simpler. My parents and grandma came over for a birthday visit and gift giving and Ella finally got some of that coveted pink cake. I took her plate away when I thought she was done only to frantically dash back into the kitchen to retrieve more when she realized it was gone. Hadn’t I learned my lesson??
She wanted that cake.

Waiting, waiting…
The rain was my cleanse. I’d wanted the day to be perfect for Ella, be able to give her whatever she wanted, and in the end I felt like I was the one who spoiled it for her. We’re constantly learning from each other. It will never end. As parents, Ant and I are at the cusp of new obstacles and it’s going to take adjustment and time to figure out what works best for us.

F.I.N.A.L.L.Y.
By the way, it rained the day she was born. It made me draw more comparisons to our birth day. Hard hard, so very hard but at the end of the day, we had each other. That day two years ago, our blessings began.
I’ve been hustling to get party prep done the last few days. I overdo it, always. Come Christmas, I am a maniac. I can’t decide what not to bake, and so I end up baking it all, a trait I proudly take from my mother and her mother alike. It feels like tradition. I am finding I will be doing the same for Ella’s birthdays.
On today’s bake schedule: Rolling cakeballs and baking sugar cookies.
Tomorrow Auntie Erin will be over to help turn those cakeballs into poison apples!

The cake ready for frosting and cake-balling

What was left in the pan. I may have spooned frosting over the top and stuffed it my yapper.
Feeling a little exhausted but invigorated at the same time. My sister (and her newly fianced man!) come in Friday afternoon, the Snow White birthday extravaganza is on Saturday, and our nephew’s birthday party is Sunday. Busy busy we have been over here, and busy we’ll continue to be, but even more blessed that we’re busy with such lovely people by our sides!
Happy Thursday-ing to you!!
