Ella is Particular

April 14th, 2010

Ella Faye’s quirks are starting to bloom.  Quirks that make her unique.  Quirks that make Ella, Ella.  I love discovering new ones and getting a glimpse into the way her sharp little mind works.

And I love that we’ll be able to tease her (lovingly, of course) about these things when she’s older.  (They’ll be better received than the cheeky photographs and videos.)

These days Ella is showing her very particular side.  Everything has its place, she’s learned.  She runs across the house to put a toy or a cup back where she picked it up from.  And she’s very willing to keep things in order (appreciated).  If an item of interest tips over, she is quick to set it back upright.  I don’t urge her to do this.  Sometimes I wonder if I should discourage all this order, as I don’t want it to turn into a compulsive habit (such as I just might possess just a little).  All in all, Ella is very particular.

Today Ella amazed me like this:

We were piecing puzzles together on her rug in her room when she walked over to her corner of stuffed animals and starting tossing them over the side of her crib.  Thud, they would land.

Some landed face down, some landed face up.  If one landed facing up, she would dutifully reach through the slats of her crib and flip it over onto its belly.

I wanted to tell her to flip them up, so we could see their faces.  How odd, I thought, that they are all face down in the bed.  Then I realized she was positioning them in the way that she sleeps.  On her belly.

She did this with all of her animals and dolls.  Some even got kisses before being tossed into bed.  I just watched, quietly amused.

When they were all snuggled in on their bellies, she turned to me, finger to nose (instead of over the mouth, this is what she does), and announced, “Shhh.  Seeping.”

She astounds me every single day.

On the morning of her first birthday.
