By the Sea – A Photo Memoir

March 22nd, 2010

Hello!

We are back at home, settled in again, after a much-anticipated romp to California.

We’ve taken our first official family vacation!  And to my favorite place, at that – San Diego.

We are so happy we were able to do this, and to share the experience with my parents and sister.  Ella loved living with her Yaya and Papa for a few days.  (She is still mentioning your names at bedtime.)

Highlights:

Successful road trip!  I had been dreading the 6-hour car ride, fearful that Ella would be too restless.  But she had no complaints throughout the whole car ride, there or back.  Not one fuss!  (I still can’t believe it.)

Beginnings of a tan.  Slightly roasted shoulders and legs.  Feels like summertime.

Ocean-gazing from our balcony.

Walking to the beach with my love and our baby before heading home on the last day.

I’d say my favorite part of the whole vacation was playing with Ella in the ocean.  To see her have so much fun and experience something new like that was amazing.  She makes my heart sing.

For posterity, I will be posting photos from our vacation over the next week in a series I like to call:

I love that Ella will be able to look back at these photo-filled posts when she is older, the same way she might flip through a scrapbook.

As every parent knows, list making is essential when planning for a vacation with a little one.  I had several.  Several.  Here is my list, in retrospect:

One rented van

+ everything baby-related

- one bouncy ball (lost on I-8)

- one beach towel (also lost on I-8)

+ one Auntie T

+ one rented beach house

+ seven flights of stairs (over and over)

+ lots of sunshine

+ lots of sand (everywhere)

+ a few midnight family game sessions

- one scoop of Cherry Garcia ice cream

+ elephants, llamas, and lions.  oh my!

- naptimes

+ one (just one!) major meltdown

equals

Countless cherished memories, very wonderful times with loved ones, great gratitude.

I can hear Summer Vacation.  It’s calling me direct.
