Weekend Wielding
March 11th, 2010
This weekend was a lovely one. Just a lot of family time. I love it when we’re not rushed, not on anyone’s agenda but our own, doing what we feel is right and rich for our budding family.
Friday night we ventured out to a little Mexican restaurant that uses only local ingredients for their dishes. This was our second visit and although we’ve recently become a vegetarian household (more on that later), Ant and I were both craving the carne asada torta with a fried egg on top. I boldly ordered it last time, and it was so good. So this time we thought, it’s local beef, none of this grossly abused meat that’s traveled insanely far to get on my plate…we can try it out. (Because although we are living a vegetarian lifestyle, we are keeping ourselves open to eating meat if we feel ethically okay about it – more on that later.)
And so we ordered our carne asada tortas with the fried eggs on top. And this time around I could not get past the beef. I pushed it aside and had my fried egg sandwich, which was really good itself. Ant ate his, meat and egg and all, then promptly got an upset tummy.
Is this because we haven’t eaten meat in a month? Or is it just the idea of consuming meat that has changed us?
While we debated our ordering decisions, Ella Faye danced around our table barefoot – apparently a newly discovered (gross) delight.
After dinner we met Ant’s grade school friend (isn’t it great to have old friends?) and his family at the children’s museum. First Fridays of every month grant free admission, and so the place was packed. We spent some time in line, then spent some time watching a pack of dancers (which included one man with a very tight, much-too-short, shirt), then did a little dancing ourselves before we were let in the building to learn and explore. Ant’s friend has a three year old and a six month old {swoon} and I think Ella had fun meeting new little friends.
Sidenote: She is so funny because she wants to be friends with everyone. A bigger kid runs by and there you find little Ella Faye, left behind, hand still in the air after offering a “Hiii” that went unheard. She’s a sweet sweet girl. I keep thinking that someday she’ll be that bigger kid that doesn’t have time to notice her little sibling. End sidenote.
We came home exhausted and ready for a late bath (to scrub those dirty dirty feet) and tuck into bed.
Saturday morning we reveled in our late start to the day, then skipped downtown to a few shops for some browsing. We went to Frances (seriously, love that store…have been there every weekend of the past three), then next door to a sweet shop called Smeeks for a little photobooth session.
We ate lunch in a bright green grassy patch of parking lot next to our favorite sandwich joint, Pane Bianco. Ella made friends with a little girl (funnily enough, named Stella) who was picnic-ing with her family too.
Ella much enjoyed her foccaccia bread (sneakily referred to as “pizza”). The weather was beautiful, just the right amount of breeze and sunshine.
I just realized she reminds me of a “Wild Thing” in these photos.
We headed home for a nap before a birthday dinner with the family (where there was a little baby nephew – swooooon).
Sunday we just enjoyed being a family. How I wish Ant could work from home and be here every day to witness the amazing things Ella does.
That day the sky was rich with indecisive storm clouds. Rain drizzling, pouring, misting on and off, we sat with the window blinds open wide and sunk into the life of our family.
It was oh so satisfying.
